Nathan Bailey Derrow Tyler was born on July 14, 1828 in Vienna, Trumbull county, Ohio. It is presumed that he was named for Reverend Nathan Bailey Derrow, minister of Vienna Presbyterian Church, who died in 1828. Tyler died on April 22, 1915 at 11:30 am at the residence of this daughter, mrs. H. Clark Thayer, Locust street. Mr. Tyler was a Mason. He followed the trade of gunsmith in his earlier life and invented several parts of breech mechanism of guns. At one time, he was the champion long distance rifle shot of the United States. The gunsmith shop of Mr. N. B. Tyler, opened last week, in the brick block, opposite the carriage factory on Liberty Street, was broken into by burglars, on last Friday night. They first entered the room on the south, late used as a shoe-shop, and from thence forced open a door leading to Mr. Tyler's shop. About a hundred dollars worth of pistols, ammunition and equipments were stolen. The thieves tried to break open safe, but did not succeed. This is not the kind of encouragement we wish to see extended to Mr. Tyler, in starting business here, as he is a good workman, and a good gunsmith is needed at this point." Owned the Tyler Rifle Works Figures in census of 1870, 1880, 1900 On August 10, 1869 eh got patent no. 93,648 for Improvement in Saw-Set and patent no. 139,836, April 17, 1873 for Impovement in Pigeon-Traps. No gun patent is found so far. In the building Tyler established Tyler Rifle Works in 1852 he operated also a hotel. He also served for a time as Vienna's postmaster from his hotel and gun works.
